STORYTIME - Don't Let Your Balls Touch Mine

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you are all doing well. In today's episode, I bring you a newly re-edited story from my old shows.  This is a story about a very fun and unusual New Year's Eve that I had when I was 29 years old. It is a tale of five of us guys that went up to a Winter chalet for partying and sports (mostly partying).  I used one small part of this true-life story in my gay erotic sports novel 'Northridge High Football Camp' that I did as an audiobook on the Jockstrap Stories podcast.

Please note: I will be alone at home this Christmas and I am trying to set up something as an online social on Christmas Day itself, for anyone who might be alone and wanting some company. I will let you know more details as they firm up.

I See Dead People - Part 4 - Q&A and STORYTIME

In this conclusion to my 'I See Dead People' series, I answer questions that have been submitted to me from listeners.  Additionally, I tell a STORYTIME story about the most difficult, gross, and heart-breaking thing I ever had to do in the funeral business. I give a warning prior to starting this story, as it is not for the faint-of-heart.

Gay Health 7 - Body Image

A discussion about the history of Body Image.  From the 1970's through today, Body Image has been something that male and female, gay and straight have often dealt with through bombardment from TV, Films, Magazines, Porn and other media. I also address my own personal struggles with this.

Changes In Sleep Habits As We Age

2022 Sweeps Period continues with an episode about sleep...or lack thereof. Most Americans do not get enough sleep and it is affecting health, both physical and mental. In reference to a magazine article I read a few years ago, I used the suggestions I mention in this episode as a way to successfully change my sleep habits by 80%. I hope you enjoy the information in this show. Thank you for joining me.

The 2022 Sweeps Period has several episodes to go, so it will run into early October.

Your Personal Trainer - Part 3 - Emotional Eating

In this show, I want to continue the 'Your Personal Trainer' series with an episode about overeating and specifically, when we eat because of emotions; whether that is depression, celebration, or even boredom.

Please note: If you feel you overeat regularly, it will eventually begin to affect your overall health. So please, consult a professional that deals with overeating and binging.

Coming up next in the 'Your Personal Trainer' series will be 'Sauna for Longevity'. Look for that episode in late October.

Gay-to-Gay Bullying

A theme I have done before, but it deserves more attention. With many believing there exists a fracture in the Gay Community due to lack of physical socializing because so many bars and clubs have closed, it becomes more important that we watch out for each other. That includes the prevailing gay-to-gay bullying that has only increased with the advent of the internet. Let's pause for a few minutes to understand how this type of behavior is more prominent when we are with our friends and within our own  cliques. Can we stop behaviors that prey on weaker people within the community when we might think we are being funny and clever?

My Favorite Episode - STORYTIME - 'The Personification of Chin-Chin'

Starting out my 2022 Sweeps Period, this is a re-edited episode that is my absolute favorite from An Older Gay Guy Show. This took place in the early 1980's while I was working as a Funeral Director & Embalmer on Cape Cod. It is the most memorable and unique experience that I ever had in the Funeral industry. It is a story that I shall never forget, and I hope you get a laugh and that it touches your heart, as it did mine.

Thank you to all my wonderful listeners for once again making me a Finalist in this year's People Choice Podcast Awards ! Hugs to all of you. ~Joey

How Do We Hold The Senior Gay Community Together ?

As we slowly start putting society back together as we all get vaccinated for Covid-19, the Senior Gay Community is something we all need to think about and work at sustaining.  Many older gay men have been isolated during these past 13 months and are now rightfully feeling hesitant about re-joining social situations where crowds might soon be gathering. How will our older LGBTQ brothers and sisters still get together for much needed friendships and reunions, and what will be the lasting community be like?

Things To Do And Say To Make Yourself Old

We all are getting older, and maybe we are becoming our parents in our thoughts and habits. Are we as Gay Seniors just tired of the world of younger people? Are we starting to say the very things our parents would say that we swore we would never become? Are we starting to border on being that grouchy, bitter old man?

Your Personal Trainer - Part 1

Today I am starting a new series that I'm calling Your Personal Trainer.  I often hear from guys that have basic workout and nutrition questions. I know hiring a Personal Trainer can be an expensive proposition, especially with the fees that will probably have to be charged by Trainers to compensate for all the lost work and income due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

So, with that in mind, I thought running this series can be beneficial to those that wish they could have a Personal Trainer to give them basic information and to do what Trainers do best; Motivate and Encourage you, as you go along. Obviously without having the option to work with you in person, it will limit how some of this training will have to be. But, I have faith that the information and me kicking your ass a bit will help you at least get started eating healthier and getting you to move! I will give you some basic at home exercises to do down the road a bit, and there will also be more advanced exercises that will have to be done in a gym, for those of you desiring these programs.

So, no matter your experience, from absolute beginners (my favorite guys!) to the more advanced training, there will be something for everyone. I truly hope you enjoy these episodes and that you will participate so we all can get these Pandemic Pounds off so we can enjoy a beautiful, active Summer. My best to all of you!  ~Joey

Life Enhancing Habits - Part 1

This is part 1 of a 2-part series on 10 Habits that can help give you a heathy life as you age. In this first part, I give an overview, some necessary disclaimers and talk in depth about the first 3 Habits. The remaining 7 will be discussed in the final installment of this series, coming in a couple of weeks.

The main content of this episode is from a draft that I had back from the first year of this show. It was never used. Due to it being done 6 years ago, the audio is not the best as I was working with my first microphone and studio set-up. I currently use my 3rd set-up for recording new episodes so there are big differences.

Thank you for listening !

Senior Life Curse: Loneliness

One of the dangers of getting old is the possibility of losing friends and family and isolating yourself in desperation to try to avoid pain. This can deprive you of some wonderful years of your life. Others find the endless search for a life partner to be depressing and debilitating. It seems that no matter what you do, you find yourself alone. And being alone for any length of time, no matter who you are, will eventually lead to loneliness. Loneliness can be crippling.

In this episode, I offer a few suggestions that might help you get started in breaking free from that solitude.

I See Dead People - Part 2 - How to Embalm a Body

In Part 2 of my 'I See Dead People' series, I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about what exactly happens when a body is embalmed.  As we age, we will encounter the need to make arrangements for funerals, as well as visit them as a friend or relative.  Should it fall on you to make the funeral arrangements, do you know what a loved one would really like for their final disposition? If you have no guidance by written wishes, you will need to make decisions that are difficult within a set amount of time to get all the arrangements in place. Embalm or Cremation? What does each really mean?

I hope that this explanation will allow you to make a more informed decision. This episode is very graphic and deals with procedures done to the body.

Let's Write A Novel - Part 1

Have you ever dreamed of writing the Great American (or wherever) Novel? Have you ever read a book and was disappointed and said 'Hey I could have written that better'?

Well, here is your chance. Most of us are still locked up in our homes and have done just about everything to occupy our time. This is the PERFECT time to try out your writing skills.

This episode (and Part 2 coming in a couple weeks) discusses my own method for writing my gay sports novel 'Northridge High Football Camp' and it's sequel 'The Guys of Northridge'. I can't say how other authors have produced their work, but the method that I used I think is a very learnable technique. So why not give it a try?

In this Part 1, I talk about the genre of your book, about establishing your main characters and creating milestone scenes to bring your characters toward the conclusion of your story.

Is Cheating The Price We Have To Pay To Have A Relationship?

So many gay men have to deal with their boyfriend/partner/husband cheating on them. Sometimes it takes years to find out, and by then you might have gotten legally married, bought a house together, co-mingled bank accounts and/or adopted children together. When your lives are so entwined, the discovery of one of you cheating can be devastating to the other. Is monogamy realistic? Can you re-build trust after being lied to? Is a cheater always a cheater?

In this episode I tell you a story from my own experience with a cheating boyfriend. I also read to you an email from a guy who is at wits end on what to do with his husband who may be cheating on him. I also asked a question of an online Gay Over 40 group, if they had been cheated on, were there tell-tale signs. I read you their responses.

This is always a difficult subject and is the continuation of an ongoing discussion about gay relationships.

I See Dead People - Part 1

Part One of a Two-Part Series on my experiences as a Funeral Director and Embalmer.  This is an insider's look into what happens when a person dies. One of the reasons I wanted to do this series is that I wanted to let you know what happens behind the scenes and ways that you could save money when you have to arrange a funeral.

This episode will be of interest to many of you, as we are all aging. Sometimes we have to do things we don't want to do, especially if we have elderly family members, or even yourself with pre-arrangements.

I wanted to make that easier for you and give you some tips that will give you information that will be useful under those circumstances. Plus, it's just fascinating stuff !

For those who get grossed out easily, embalming stuff will be in Part 2, so no worries about this episode.

INTERVIEW - Officer Ron, Gay Prison Guard - Part 1

Sweeps Period 2019 begins with a fascinating Interview Show with Officer Ron Odion, a retired, Gay Prison Guard who worked in a State Penitentiary in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 24 years.

In a 3-part episode arc, Officer Ron gives us a glimpse into the true-life workings of a prison: the guards, the prisoners and the many facets of activities that make up the Correctional System. Officer Ron tells us of his experiences in the Training Academy and how he was treated, and tells us stories of what is was like to be a gay man in this testosterone-fueled climate.

Don't miss this fascinating look at an institution that most of us (thankfully) will never see on our own.

Vacationing Alone

Many of us older gay guys are single, and as we age, we might lose contact with friends through relocation, illness, death, arguments; a host of reasons. And that can lead to isolation and eventual depression.

One of the ways that I have dealt with loneliness over the years, is that I learned how to travel by myself and enjoy the experiences many times more than if I had a traveling companion. Now traveling alone for some, is a very strange concept. Why would you want to be alone? Isn't the point of traveling to be able to enjoy the location, sights, dinners, memories etc. with someone else? Maybe. But what if you don't have a boyfriend/husband or friends that want to travel to some of the exotic places you always dreamed of going? Should you wait until you have a partner to travel with? (We aren't getting any younger!) Or, do we have to give up on ever going to those places?

I want to tell you about a few of my experiences with circling the globe alone and the self-sufficiency I learned along the way.

Being The Third Wheel

Don't you hate it when one of your closest friends, maybe even your BEST friend, gets into a relationship with a guy and suddenly you don't hear from him as often, or hang out with him as often? And then you find yourself being invited out with the new couple, and you become the dreaded '3rd wheel'. That sucks. Even worse, what if all your friends in your immediate social circle are in relationships and you are the only one left single? So when you go out, you are the.....11th wheel? 19th? How do you possibly navigate that?!?  Let's discuss !

Don't miss An Older Gay Guy Show LIVE Interactive Show, the 'I HATE/LOVE Valentine's Day Show' on Valentine's Day NIGHT, February 14, 2019 from 10:00 pm - 12 Midnight, Eastern Standard Time (7:00 - 9:00 pm West Coast, 12 noon - 2:00 pm on Friday in Australia)

Why Are Young Gay Guys Such Dickwads ?

The first episode of Season 4 comes via an email I received from a very nice gentleman in Australia. It has prompted a discussion on why young gay guys are so unkind and mean. As always, this is based on my opinions and my experience. I hope it can prompt some thoughts.

The Vintage TV Trivia Question of the week is a fun reflection on The Dick Van Dyke Show from the 1960's.

I am looking for guests for this season. If you feel you have a story to tell that relates to the older gay community, please contact me and let me know you'd like to come on. It is a pre-recorded interview that can be edited, so please have no fears about doing the show. It will be fun and relaxing. Contact me via: AnOlderGayGuyShow@gmail.com

INTERVIEW - The Latest in Cosmetic Work for Guys with Kris Venezia - Part Two

This year's Sweeps Period concludes with the 2nd Part of my conversation with Kris Venezia about what is new in the areas of cosmetic work available for guys.

This is not a suggestion or endorsement for you to run out and get cosmetic work, but for many older guys, especially those who have suffered from the effects of HIV and the powerful drugs that are taken to keep it at bay, this information is important. With some, it could even be life-saving, as the depression and isolation people often feel can take its toll on the psyche.

In this second half, we discuss Cool Sculpting, Gastric Bypass and Hair Pieces (and those in Hollywood that wear them!) So sit back and enjoy this insider's look at the world of cosmetic work.

** This Sunday, September 30, 2018, is International Podcast Day and will be the announcement of the Winners of the 13th Annual People's Choice Podcast Awards. I am Nominated for 2 Podcast Awards: The LGBTQ Podcast Award and the Mature Podcast Award. Self-Doubt vs. Confidence - Impostor Syndrome

At the request of a listener from British Columbia, Canada regarding his self-doubt as he takes a new position running a sports team, we look at two self-esteem philosophies: The Peter Principle and Impostor Syndrome. Now while these theories can be viewed as a negative source of esteem, when coupled with a more applicable and positive method of coping with self-esteem that we talk about in the second half of today's episode, we can assess our self-doubt easier when looking at this subject from various points of view. The episode concludes with a basic tenant of success that we can all apply in times of indecision and uncertainty.

A Vintage TV Trivia Question is posed at the start of the show and the answer is given in the concluding minutes of the podcast.

Thanks so much for joining me today !

Getting Outside Yourself

This serious episode is the second half of my series on Depression that started with the episode 'Depression: Emotional Eating'. Today I tell you about the serious danger that I was in due to depression after my parent's deaths. I discuss how my depression first surfaced, plans I had made to take my own life and treatment that I sought out to deal with my issues of grief.  But most importantly, I talk about revelations I had during this process that allowed me to view the world in a different way, that ultimately has brought me to the better place I am in these last 20 years or so.

This episode is my personal experiences and opinions. Do not view this as any kind of therapy or professional guidance. If you feel you are depressed or if you ever have suicidal thoughts, please seek out professional help. I have been able to overcome my grief and relationship issues only through professional therapy and prescribed medications. This show is only my personal opinions.

Expanding Horizons

Age is just a number, right? So maybe there are some dreams that we used to have when we were 'younger' that we kind of pushed back for someday in the future, or maybe we just gave up on those dreams altogether. I Must Forgive

I share a story that I didn't think I would ever talk tell on a podcast. But having just had a birthday, I decided that I needed to tell this tale, and explain why I feel like a free man now.

This is not the typical episode of this show. But if you are a person who has struggled with the past, running a movie-like memory over and over again in your mind, this story might be of value to you.

This is a VERY personal account (all names have been changed) of a difficult time in my life, when as a teenager, my parents died. I talk about the one person in my life, that I might describe as someone that I 'Hated' for 43 years.
